I’m John Moore and I’m a serial entrepreneur and retired Army Colonel who became a business coach. I’m still working with business owners and now I train elite business coaches.

In 1971, at the age of eleven, I started my first business. For fifty cents a week, I carried my neighbors’ trash from their apartment door to the dumpster. Today that service is called “Valet Trash Removal.” My brand wasn’t nearly as polished—but it was profitable. By the next year I had added two more ventures: a newspaper route and a small candle-making and distribution business. Yes, I was a candlestick maker.

From age thirteen through high school, I worked in three local small businesses—our golf course, the bowling alley, and the family-owned hardware store in the center of our small town. Minimum wage was $1.65 an hour, and I was thrilled when I would pick up my $95 paycheck for two weeks of work. By the time I was 16 I had saved enough to buy a 1970 orange Ford Maverick for $1,300. More important than the money, I learned lessons about leadership, customer service, and accountability that stayed with me for life.

After graduating high school in 1978, I left home for West Point. I graduated in 1982 and went on to serve 30 years as an Airborne-Ranger and Infantry Officer. I had the privilege of commanding soldiers on five continents, served four combat tours, and retired as a Colonel in 2012. I loved those years of service, the people, the mission, the sense of purpose.

When I retired, I faced a choice. I could take a secure government job with FEMA for $145,000 a year and build a second pension—or I could return to my entrepreneurial roots. After 34 years in the world’s largest bureaucracy, I chose to build businesses instead. Since then, I’ve launched two more companies, and at 65, I’m still driven by the challenge, the constant learning, and the opportunity to help business owners.

It’s been 54 years since I slid my first handwritten flyers under apartment doors. My offer was simple; my margins were 100%—thanks to Mom covering the printing—and my customers were happy. That experience was the beginning of a lifetime as a leader, entrepreneur, and business owner.

Now I am dedicated to transforming the lives of overstressed business owners by helping them install a system that performs like a high performance, Formula One race car. Most small business owners are in the daily grind and simply survive when they should be a thriving engine of economic growth for their communities. My newfound mission is to change the face of business in America by eliminating entrepreneurial poverty and coaching entrepreneurs to be strategic, not tactical.
